Thunder in Saskatoon

Nice looking clouds outside today as the sun and the clouds battle for space!

Storms Today - Central Saskatchewan - Southern Ontario

Two places of interest today. Central Saskatchewan and southern Ontario should get an honorable mention. The huge storms that finally left Manitoba yesterday are now re-organizing in the same hot air just further south and intesified by the surrounding lakes. However, as usual with Ontario storms, the wind shear is not as good there and with all the trees and buildings, it has to be some of the worst areas to chase storms in Canada. Back in Saskatchewan however, our skies are cooking up right now and my cam shows the soupy looking clouds in the north with layers and really nice convective (pop-corn) clouds forming all over the place. I think we actually have way too much moisture and unless it clears out and heats up, storms will be mild out here today. Ontario is going to see some major light shows tonight though.

Nice Gradient in Southern Manitoba

It is 29C in south-east Manitoba, Winnipeg is 22C, Cypress Hills, Saskatchewan is only 6C !! Seems like a good chance of a monster storm to develop somewhere but it looks like that is much further south. Storms will likely develop somewhere along the International border.

Saskatoon & Area Storms

Some pretty incredible looking storm clouds rolled by and apparently through parts of the city of Saskatoon this evening. It wasn't a very big cluster of cells but it sure put on a show. Colorful clouds with purple lightning made for quite a sight west of the city.

New Template for Canadian Prairie Storms

Finally got around to fixing up the template on this blog. It might have to do with the numbers of visitors to this blog doubling and tripling in the last two days. Storms are everywhere around us right now. Nice and calm in Saskatoon but it looks like Regina is going to get another light show. Watches have been up all around Saskatoon but not the city itself, yet. "Muggy" is the most popular word in Saskatoon today!

Saskatchewan Storms

This storm got big but it didn't drop or move very far. Still lots of storms out there right now. The photo is from near Harris, Saskatchewan, which is about 76.6 km south west of Saskatoon (according to

Possible Severe Weather Outbreak - Alberta Saturday

The Prairie Storm Prediction Centre has mentioned the possibility of a "severe weather outbreak" on Saturday in Alberta. This should not be taken lightly as it is the month of May and the states are very quiet for this time of year. It is not unusual to have over a hundred tornado reports in a single day in the states at this time of the year. Most importantly, this year, March and April produced more tornadoes than May which IS unusual. Is the weather skipping a month? If so, June/July weather is already here!

Nice Day Today

Warm temperatures are giving Alberta and Manitoba an early taste of summer. The usual hotspots are in the low thirties with Drumheller checking in at 32C. Highest dewpoints are at North Battleford, Meadow Lake and Spiritwood. Humidities are a bit low but capes appear to be reaching 2000. Seems to be some light wind shear as well. Definitely worth watching.

Severe Weather Outlook Map for the Canadian Prairies

The map has been fixed up a bit as we get closer to seeing some real storms around here. There is some convecting clouds to the west of Saskatoon but we are not expecting too much severe weather until it heats up a bit more.

Severe Thundertorm Risk for Central Alberta

There is a slight risk of a severe thunderstorm this afternoon in the area north of Lloyminister, Alberta. All the elements are in place for a thunderstorm that may reach severe levels but these storms are not expected to be very big.
